A bill that will make it easier to become a barber passed the House this week.
Sponsored by Rep. Mike Clines (R-Ft. Thomas), HB 172 seeks to make a change relating to barber school instructors.
“We are seeing severe workforce shortages in the barbering field, and it is crucial we do what we can to open more opportunities for people who want to go into the field,” Clines said.
HB 172 authorizes the board to issue a license to operate a school of barbering to any person, firm, or corporation that has provided sufficient evidence that enough licensed instructors will be employed, with at least one instructor with a minimum of 12 months experience teaching in a barber school that includes administrative experience.
“Three schools have closed due to not having instructors who fall under the current requirements in Kentucky statue and this has caused areas of the state to be severely underrepresented,” Clines said.
The change will address a workforce development issue and helps confront the declining number of instructors and schools across the commonwealth.
“I am hopeful that if this legislation passes, the barbering field in the state will have more opportunities to cultivate their workforce,” Clines said.
